The EV Charger DIY Myth: Why Brisbane’s New Compliance Portal Changes Everything

Thinking of installing that EV charger yourself? Fair enough. The box shows up, you’ve watched a few clips online, and the wall mount looks simple. Run some cable, connect a couple of wires. Save a few hundred bucks. What’s the worst that could happen?

Plenty, actually.

Besides the obvious risk of getting zapped or starting a fire, there’s a new system in Brisbane that tracks every electrical job done in your home. It’s called the BCNSW eCert Portal. And if you’re not a licensed sparky, you can’t use it. That means no compliance certificate. No certificate means trouble-big trouble-if you ever sell the house or make an insurance claim.

Is it even legal to install your own EV charger?

Nope. Not in Queensland.

Under the Electrical Safety Act, you can’t do any electrical work unless you hold a licence. Installing a wall charger counts as electrical work. It’s not like swapping a light bulb or plugging in a toaster. You’re running a new circuit, pulling high-current cable, and connecting into the switchboard. That’s licensed work. Full stop.

What can you do? Change a light bulb. Plug things in. Mount a shelf. That’s about it.

Get caught doing unlicensed electrical work and the fines are steep. We’re talking up to forty grand per offence. There was a case not long ago where a bloke got fined six and a half thousand just for putting in ceiling lights and fans without a ticket. Imagine what an EV charger would cost you.

The new portal makes getting caught almost certain

Used to be that compliance paperwork was done on paper. A sparky would scribble out a form, bung it in the mail, and it’d end up in a drawer somewhere. Not exactly a tight system.

That changed on 1 March 2026.

Now every Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work-called a CCEW-has to go through the BCNSW eCert Portal. No more handwritten forms. No more PDFs emailed around. It’s all digital. And electricians have to lodge it within seven days of finishing the job.

So what’s that mean for you?

When you sell your house, the buyer’s lawyer will ask for the CCEW for that EV charger. If you don’t have one, the sale can stall or fall through. Same deal if your house has an electrical fire. The insurance company will want proof the work was done by a licensed sparky. No certificate? Claim denied.

The portal makes sure every legit job leaves a digital footprint. No footprint means the job wasn’t legit. Simple as that.

Why EV chargers aren’t just fancy power points

A lot of people think a wall charger is basically a heavy-duty outdoor socket. It’s not even close.

A normal power point handles 10 amps. A typical 7kW home charger pulls 32 amps. That’s over three times the juice. And it pulls that load for hours at a time while your car charges.

That kind of current needs:

  • Its own dedicated circuit run from the switchboard
  • Properly sized cable-usually 6mm² minimum
  • RCD protection to stop you getting electrocuted if something faults
  • A switchboard that can actually handle the extra load

If any of that is done wrong, you’re looking at wires overheating inside your walls. You won’t see it until it’s too late. And if the fire investigator pins it on unlicensed work, your home insurance is worthless.

The Energex part most people forget

Here’s another layer. In Queensland, Energex runs the poles and wires that feed your street. If you’re putting in a charger over 20 amps-which covers most 7kW home units-your sparky has to lodge something called an Electrical Works Request with Energex.

This isn’t just ticking a box. Energex checks if your street can handle the extra load. Sometimes they make you put in a network device to manage demand. A proper electrician knows how to do all this. They’ve got access to the Energex portal. They know the process.

A DIY installer can’t even log in. And if Energex finds out you’ve hooked up a high-load charger without approval, they can pull your power. Getting it turned back on means paying a sparky to fix the mess and certify everything from scratch. That’ll cost way more than doing it right the first time.

What actually happens during a proper install

When you get a licensed Brisbane sparky to do the job, here’s what you’re paying for:

First up, a site check.
We come out and look at your switchboard. We work out what your house is already pulling and whether there’s room for a new 32-amp circuit. Plenty of older Brisbane homes don’t have the capacity to run a charger at full speed. The good news is most chargers can be dialled down to suit what your place can handle.

Switchboard check.
Older homes often have ceramic fuses and no RCDs on half the circuits. An EV charger needs proper RCD protection on its own dedicated circuit. If your board’s not up to it, we’ll let you know what needs doing.

Cable run and install.
We run a new circuit from the board to where you want the charger. Correct cable size. Solid connections. Everything to AS/NZS 3000 standards. There’s even a specific appendix-Appendix P-that covers EV charger installs.

Testing and paperwork.
After it’s in, we run a bunch of tests. Then we lodge the CCEW through the eCert Portal. That gives you the digital record you need for insurance and future sale.

Energex notification.
If the charger’s over 20 amps, we handle the EWR with Energex. Any follow-up-like putting in a network device-we sort it.

What’s it actually cost?

Ballpark figure for an EV charger install in Brisbane is somewhere between fifteen hundred and three and a half grand. Depends on a few things.

Rough breakdown:

  • The charger itself: $500 to $1500
  • Labour: $750 to $2500 depending on how tricky the run is
  • Switchboard work if needed: $500 to $1500
  • Compliance certificate and portal stuff: included

Yeah, it’s money. But stack it up against the alternatives. A house fire costs a lot more. A voided insurance claim leaves you with nothing. Fines from the Electrical Safety Office can hit tens of thousands. And when you sell, a dodgy charger install can knock thousands off your sale price or kill the deal entirely.

A properly installed charger also adds value. More EVs on the road every year. Homes with compliant chargers already in place are going to be worth more.
