EV chargers installation Brisbane

It is worth keeping in mind that not all properties in Queensland will have the capacity to run a wall charger at full capacity due to power supply limitations to the property. Fortunately, most wall charger manufacturers have selectable settings where the charging output can be turned down to suit the property’s power availability without needing any additional upgrades.

As the number of EV charger installation Brisbane on the road increases, the number of properties allowed to have fully connected wall chargers will be less and less over time. Applying the rules of ‘supply & demand’, having a BYD charger in your property will be a significant value adding feature in years to come. Should your property require a power upgrade to have a wall charger with a full 7kW capacity, this investment will return dividends comes time to sell.

Tesla, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Mitsubishi EV Chargers

Our team can help you figure out how much power you have and then install a charger for your electric car. Whether it’s at your home, business, or factory, we can set up a charger for any electric car. We’ve installed chargers for different brands like Tesla, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Mitsubishi. We also know how to install BYD chargers, so your charging setup can work with different electric cars, including Tesla cars

Level 1 Chargers

This is the most basic charger that usually comes standard with an electric vehicle to provide around 2.4kW of charging power. They literally plug into any of your home’s regular 10 Amp power points – the same as any other appliance in the home (phone chargers, toasters, etc). Whist these chargers are convenient, they only offer what’s referred to as ‘trickle charging’, meaning a slow charge that can take up to 48hrs to fully charge the vehicle. These are more suited for hybrid vehicles, or EV’s that are only driven a few times a week.

Level 1.5 Chargers

There’s a small improvement available to the Level 1 chargers (that CM Electrical Qld like to call Level 1.5), and that is to install a power point with a 50% increase in power delivery to around 3.5kW. The installation of a dedicated 15 Amp power outlet is quite often the best option available to homes that do not have the available power supply to install a Level 2 charger.

Level 2 Chargers

Level 2 chargers are dedicated wall boxes, or HPWC’s (High Power Wall Connectors) that provide a faster rate of charging to your EV. As there are 2 different types of power supply in the world – Single Phase and 3 Phase – we’ve broken the charger descriptions down, because while they may look the same their performance and installation requirements are very different.

Level 2.0 Chargers (Single Phase)

Level 2.0 chargers are much more powerful, going from 10 Amps up to 32 Amps, which is about 7kW. This means they can charge electric cars much faster, usually in less than 12 hours from empty to full. But, installing a charger this strong requires checking if your house or business can handle it. We’ve found that 95% of homes don’t have enough power and need an upgrade to use these chargers.

In Queensland, the company that provides electricity, Energex, has rules for chargers stronger than 20 Amps. They must be connected in a way that they only charge your car during times when electricity is cheaper and not as much in demand, which is usually up to 18 hours a day.

If you want 24/7 charging available to your property, your only option is to install a 3 Phase charger, which may mean upgrading your property power supply to 3 Phase.

Level 2.5 Chargers (3 Phase)

Moving up to Level 2.5 significantly boosts your charging power from approximately 7kW to a substantial 22kW. This translates to the potential of covering up to 22km of travel in just 10 minutes, or an impressive 130km within a single hour of charging. Notably, unlike Single Phase chargers, this enhanced charging capability is accessible 24/7. If your property accommodates more than one electric vehicle (EV), opting for Level 2.5 could prove to be the ideal solution for your charging needs.

Level 3 Chargers

These chargers, commonly known as ‘Superchargers,’ exclusively function as public DC chargers. They play a crucial role in making electric vehicles (EVs) practical for long-distance travel with minimal charging times. The charging capacity spans from 50kW on a rapid charger to 350kW on an ultra-rapid unit. At the lower end, this method adds up to 150km of range per hour when plugged in, while at the upper end, it can recharge certain electric vehicles from zero to 80% in under 30 minutes. Due to the substantial power requirements of these charging stations, significant infrastructure upgrades are necessary. This process involves close coordination with local government offices and power authorities.

For basic installations where the wall charger will be located within close proximity to the property’s meter box or switchboard, we can provide a free quotation over the phone or email if the photographs are sent through of the area of installation, and detailed photos of the electrical switchboard. (All details can be submitted on our form)

If the EV charger installation Brisbane and switchboard aren’t nearby (such as in an apartment block, or opposing ends of the property), we will need to inspect the property to provide an accurate quote. For site inspections there is a $185 fee.

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended as your main charging method. Regular 10-amp power points charge extremely slowly (around 10km of range per hour) and aren’t designed for the prolonged heavy load, which can overheat circuits and create fire risks. A dedicated EV charger installed by CM Electrical Qld charges 5-10 times faster and is much safer. It’s the smart investment for anyone serious about owning an electric vehicle in Brisbane.

Yes, but charging at home is still much cheaper than petrol. Charging a typical EV costs around $10-15 for a full charge (giving you 300-500km range), compared to $60-100 to fill a petrol tank for similar range. If you charge overnight on off-peak rates, it’s even cheaper. Many Brisbane EV owners spend less than $30-50 per month on charging. Plus, if you have solar panels, you can charge for almost free during the day.

CM Electrical Qld can install EV chargers that integrate with your existing solar system in Brisbane. We’ll ensure your switchboard can handle both systems and set everything up for optimal performance and savings.

Level 1 chargers plug into regular power points (10 amps) and are very slow – adding only about 10km per hour. Level 2 chargers are hardwired units installed by electricians that deliver 7-22kW, adding 30-60km of range per hour. For home use in Brisbane, Level 2 chargers are the way to go. CM Electrical Qld specialises in Level 2 installations that give you fast, convenient charging at home.
